Chivas defeat Morelia in friendly in San Jose

Photo by Kavin Mistry Avaya Stadium received a makeover on Friday night. The stadium that is   usually dressed in blue, wore white and red stripes instead   as San Jose received Mexican Powerhouse, Chivas de Guadalajara defeated Monarcas Morelia, 2-1, in a friendly match.  With every seat almost filled, fans of all ages were present to see Liga MX sides collide in a match that usually takes place in Mexico. Avaya Stadium is the home of the San Jose Earthquakes, however with all of the red and white throughout the stadium it felt like a home game for Chivas. Drums, Chivas flags, thrown toilet paper on the goals and red and screaming fans were all part of the entertainment throughout the night. Although   the MLS and most leagues around the world are   on break for FIFA international match dates, the Bay Area still enjoyed the buzz of club soccer. Usually, most teams tend to use this week-long break as a time to recuperate from long seasons, get players healthy and tra

Quakes lose in must-win game against Kansas City

The San Jose Earthquakes were back home on Saturday night against Sporting Kansas City after snatching a point in Colorado last week.  In a crucial game against 6th place Kansas City, the Earthquakes were in dire need of a victory with just six games to go in the season before playoffs begin in October. Although the Earthquakes dominated most of the game, the team fell short, losing 2-1 after conceding a late goal in the 80th minute. “ It’s killer to be honest,” said San Jose Earthquakes Head Coach Dominic Kinnear. “ With them [Sporting KC] now being nine points ahead of us … we have to put together a run of wins that we haven’t done this year so it’s going to take a monumental effort.” The game began quickly when the Earthquakes drove the ball down the middle of the field and had an opportunity in front of goal in the first 20 seconds. The right footed shot from San Jose Earthquakes forward Chris Wondolowski  was saved by Kansas City goalkeeper Tim Melia in the bottom right

Copa America: Celebrating 100 years of soccer magic in the South Bay

For the whole month of June ,  Copa America swept the nation for its 100th anniversary in its Copa America Centenario.   For the Bay Area that meant attention from fans from across the world who saw global soccer stars go at it on the pitch of  Levi’s Stadium  in Santa Clara, California. The tournament became famous in South America in 1916, where only teams from the region were   allowed to play. However this time around ,  it was different.  Not only did Copa America bring world renowned soccer stars together, but it also brought fans and media attention back to the Bay Area since February when it hosted Super Bowl 50. From June 3 to June 26 CONCACAF (the football confederation for North and Central America and the Caribbean) and CONMEBOL (the South America football confederation), joined together to celebrate 100 years of this tournament allowing fans in the U.S. to take part in the celebration for the first time in its history.  Photos by Jovanni Arroyo-Camberos Play

Mexico advance, despite a sloppy first half performance

Infographic by Jovanni Arroyo-Camberos In a much tighter game than expected, the Mexican national team found a way to defeat Jamaica, 2-0, in their second game of Group C in the Copa America Centenario. Mexico has now qualified to the quarterfinals with the victory Thursday night at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California. The team came into the match after a surprising 3-1 win over Uruguay. Nothing but perfection was expected from Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez and the rest of the Mexican team coming into the game against Jamaica. As soon as the whistle blew, the match turned into a battle between both sides. Neither Mexico or Jamaica could get their shots on target as play from both teams were sloppy going back and forth throughout the first half. “It wasn’t the best game for the team, it’s clear, but in these circumstances it’s important to know how to win and get the result,” said Mexico goalie Guillermo Ochoa. “ ... we had a few turnovers that cost us counter att

U.S. national team finds its rhythm in crucial victory against Costa Rica

Infographic by Jovanni Arroyo-Camberos In a must-win game for the U.S., the team who lost 2-0 to Colombia in the opening match of Copa America, ran away with a 4-0 victory Tuesday night against Costa Rica in Chicago, Illinois. The U.S. national team, and the host nation of the Copa America Centenario 2016, entered the match on the brink of elimination in Group A and now control their own destiny heading into their final match against Paraguay. Some pressure from U.S. Soccer President, Sunil Gulati, was lifted off of U.S. coach Jurgen Klinsmann’s shoulders after the win. Just before the match had begun, Gulati told a small group of reporters that the results since the beginning of 2015 have not been good enough. “ The results over the last 18 months, overall, have not been what we would've hoped for -- especially in the official competitions," Gulati said in an interview just hours before the match. Klinsmann and his group of players answered those critic

Mexico open Copa America campaign with victory against Uruguay

Infographic by Jovanni Arroyo-Camberos If anything was certain, it was that match six of the Copa America would be a high intense game that fans were looking for with this tournament. Although Barcelona superstar forward, Luis Suarez, was ruled out of the match because of a hamstring injury, the match still provided spectators with a lot of fireworks. Mexico defeated the no. 9 ranked Uruguay, 3-1, in the second game of Group C Sunday night in Glendale, Arizona. A crowd of 60,025 fans saw 37-year old and longtime Mexico captain, Rafael Marquez, score the go ahead goal securing three points and first place in the group for the team. “ I think we did a good job in the first half and we fell asleep a little in the beginning of the second half,” Marquez said in a postgame interview. “We reacted to their goal and we had much more confidence once we scored our second goal.” Mexico began the game with the fast-paced style offense coach Juan Carlos Osorio has brought

Controversy behind new SJSU defensive coach hiring

The new defensive coordinator, hired by San Jose State University, was fired as head coach of the Eastern Michigan University (EMU) football team by Interim President Sue Martin when she was the President of EMU in 2013 after a locker room video of him saying a homophobic slur was released.   Ron English has already been introduced to the team as the new defensive coordinator and replaced Greg Robinson, who retired after the Spartans Bowl game on Dec.19.   “As president at Eastern Michigan University, I hired Ron English to lead the football program.” Martin said. “In November 2013, I fired him.” Martin’s decision to fire English was peculiar because, in college sports, the athletic director is responsible for hiring and firing the athletic staff. English was fired less than 24 hours before EMU’s rivalry game against Western Michigan, after The Detroit News revealed school officials had obtained a tape of English’s tirade from late October 2015. In the video, English w
